First Generation Students
Welcome to Southeastern! As a potential first-generation student, know that we are
here to help you navigate the process of becoming the first college graduate in your
family.
A first-generation student is a student whose parents or legal guardians have not
yet completed a bachelor’s degree. This is something to be very proud of, but can
also be challenging. You will face unique challenges on this exciting journey and
we hope to help you along the way.
The Process
Fortunately, our admissions process is not complicated. First, it is important to
know dates and any potential fees. You can find those here. Depending on your status, you will simply follow the normal application process
for your situation.
The key is to make sure to ask for help at any juncture that you feel confused or
uncertain. Our staff in the Admission and Enrollment offices are here to help. If
you are in high school, your guidance or college counselor can help you as well. If
you are transferring from another junior college or university, we can help answer
questions about that as well.
The Educational Opportunity Center is also here to help students apply for admission to post secondary education; to
complete financial forms; and to assist with enrollment to any college or University.
Check out their services and see if you are eligible today!
Tips
Being successful and earning your degree is your ultimate goal. To do that, use all
of the resources that we offer as well as take steps on your own to significantly
increase your chances of success.
What can you do?
Get involved – with over 130 student organizations, daily activities and more there is always
something you can be involved in.
Make friends and build a support network – having a social group makes it far more likely that you will succeed.
Learn about the resources on campus – from the Center for Student Excellence to the Counseling Center to the EOC, we
are here to help.
Meet your professors – let them know you are serious and want to succeed. The better they know you, the
more help they can provide.
Have balance – you may be working while you are in school, that is great, but don’t overdue it.
Balancing full time studies and a job can be tough. Don’t try to cram 30 hours into
a 24 hour day!
Make sure your family/parents know that you need their support. Keep them informed what your college experience is like so they better understand
what to expect and how they can help.
Have Fun! College should be a fun experience. The more you enjoy it the better you will do!
Remember – Southeastern is here to serve you. Our motto is “You Matter Here,” and that is
true. You do!
