Phi Sigma Iota, International Foreign Language Honors Society

Honor Society

Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study or teaching of any of the academic fields related to foreign language, literature, or culture. These fields include not only modern foreign languages, but also Classics, Linguistics, Philology, Comparative Literature, Bilingual Education, Second Language Acquisition and other interdisciplinary programs with a significant foreign language component. Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. There are approximately 250 chapters of Phi Sigma Iota at institutions of higher learning in the US, Mexico and France. Southeastern Louisiana University is the Zeta Alpha chapter.

Qualifications for membership in PSI

Members are advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the fields of:

  • Foreign Languages (including classics and ESL)
  • Comparative Literature
  • Foreign Language Education
  • Linguistics
  • Second Language Acquisition

Members are required to:

  • Major or Minor in one of the above fields
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Attain junior standing or above before initiation
  • Be at the upper 35% of their class.

Italian Club

Mission Staement

The purpose of the Italian Club of Southeastern Louisiana University is to encourage the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the Italian language and culture and its influence and contributions to our own culture and way of life through informal gatherings, sponsorship of guest speakers from the university and the wider community, visits to local points of interest regarding Italian culture, and participation in university sponsored events.

Student Ambassador Program

Student ambassadors for the Department of World Languages and Cultures are a select group of individuals who act as representatives of the department in various capacities with the mission of raising awareness about the importance of bilingualism and biculturalism among undergraduate and graduate students and in the immediate community. World Languages and Cultures student ambassadors work in tandem with department faculty, staff, and students to engage and educate the public on relevant concerns.

The Student Ambassadors pride themselves on developing the following values :

  • Providing Academic Support for the department and each other
  • Making professional and social Connections
  • Bringing Engagement & Excitement to the Department
  • Giving our best Effort
  • Developing long lasting Friendships
  • Keeping Teamwork central to everything that we do

Qualifications:

  • Must be passionate about world languages and cultures
  • Have a cumulative GPA of a 2.5
  • A commitment to the celebration of multiculturalism and linguistic diversity on Southeastern’s campus and the southeast region of Louisiana
  • Show enthusiasm toward the study of world languages and cultures and their promotion at Southeastern
  • Have a dedication to excellence at Southeastern
  • Must be enrolled in and successfully complete six (6) units per semester at Southeastern
  • Must be a student in good standing and not on Academic, Progress, or Disciplinary Probation or Suspension
