Recent graduate lands journalism job after serving as editor-in-chief of Southeastern's award-winning yearbook

Thursday, March 19, 2015

Recent graduate Chris Martin gained valuable leadership skills, practical knowledge and hands-on journalism experience during his time at Southeastern, where he studied communication and served as editor-in-chief of the university's 2014 yearbook. In addition to earning his undergraduate degree and leading a team of students to win an unprecedented 14 awards for their work on last year's "Le Souvenir," Martin was able to begin his journalism career right after graduation.

Immediately after production finished for the yearbook, Martin was hired as a page designer for the copy desk at "The Advocate," a major metropolitan newspaper in Baton Rouge.

Recent graduate Chris Martin launched his career as a page designer for "The Advocate" in Baton Rouge.

"As a recent graduate, the skills and experience I gained while at Student Publications from both the yearbook and newspaper have enabled me to start my career as a journalist on the right foot," said Martin. "As for the work during my time as a student, I must thank all of my fellow students who made all of this possible. Without their tireless efforts, none of these accomplishments would have been possible."

Martin and the "Le Souvenir" staff recently earned the most awards in school history for their work on the publication from the 2015 Gold Circle Awards for Yearbooks from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Martin earned three first place awards for his design and photography work in categories such as "title page design" and "sport action photo." His submission in the "photo portfolio" category, a collection of photography published in the yearbook, was selected as the best in the competition. He also received a second place honor for his written work in the "sports reporting" category.
