Southeastern LSBDC and NTCC to hold hazardous materials course

HAMMOND – The Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at Southeastern
Louisiana University and Northshore Technical Community College will co-host a safety
training and education course for hazardous materials.
Titled “Hazardous Materials Awareness,” the program will take place in Hammond
on Friday, July 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Southeastern Small Business Development
Center, located at 1514 Martens Drive.
The cost to attend is $69. Registration is available online at registration.xenegrade.com/northshore/searchResults.cfm and ends July 13.
“This workshop is recommended for hazardous materials workers and those interested
in pursuing careers in the fields of maritime, nursing, law enforcement, fire or emergency
agencies departments, or dock and off-shore work, and those citizens interested in
preparing for unforeseen exposure to hazardous materials,” said Sandy Summers, assistant
director of the Small Business Development Center.
The course involves eight hours of classroom instruction, case studies and interactive
tabletop scenarios emphasizing the concept of materials awareness. Topics include
an introduction to the laws, standards and regulations that apply to hazardous materials
incidents and response; and insight on recognition of a hazardous materials incident,
notification of appropriate authorities and maintenance of the safety of personnel.
