HAMMOND – The current Southeastern Louisiana University artist-in-residence Abigail
Smithson will give a public lecture on Thursday, April 19, at 2 p.m. in the Contemporary
Art Gallery. “Dear Adam Silver,” a lecture focused around Smithson’s basketball research,
is free and open to the public.
Smithson, who also teaches two introductory photography classes in the Department
of Visual Art + Design, loves watching both professional and recreational basketball
and sees the games as “a way to engage my surrounding community and to confront the
struggles that we face as a country.”
Smithson will remain in the Hammond area until May 24, when her exhibit about
basketball opens in the contemporary art gallery.
Contemporary Art Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., with
extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and Friday 8 a.m.- 12 p.m.
