Sims Library offers different study and work environments. We have study rooms, collaborative spaces, and quiet zone areas available.

Open/Collaborative Areas

Open and collaborative areas allow you to study in groups or singly without a reservation. They are on all floors of the library.

Group Study Rooms (currently unavailable)/Study Carrels   

The Library has 10 group study rooms on the 4th floor for collaborative study, class work and research. Available rooms may be checked out at the 1st floor Circulation Desk with a valid Southeastern ID. Study carrels on the 3rd and 4th floors are available by request to support study and research by currently enrolled graduate students and full-time faculty.

Quiet Zones

The Library has two designated zones for quiet study purposes only. These are located on the 3rd and 4th floors. The 3rd floor quiet zone is located on the north side of the library facing Pride Hall. The 4th floor quiet zone is located past the book stacks in the northwest corner of the floor.

Group Study Room Facilities

Study rooms are equipped with a table, chairs, and a dry erase board.  

Markers and erasers are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor.

Group Study Room Use Policies


  • Group study rooms may be charged out to current Southeastern students, faculty, and staff only, with a valid Southeastern ID card and a current signed study room agreement.

  • Group study rooms are limited to a 2-hour loan period. Renewals are allowed if no other students are waiting.

  • The rooms are designed for group collaboration, not individual study. While individuals may use a room if available, please be gracious about surrendering the space if requested by a group.

  • Study rooms should not be left unattended. The Library is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal property.

  • Users are responsible for any damages to the room and its contents during use. Vandalism, activities threatening or disruptive to others will not be tolerated.

  • Key cards returned late are fined $1.00 per hour starting with the first minute overdue, up to $25.00. A $20 fee will be charged for any non-returned key card along with the maximum overdue fine.

  • No food allowed and only drinks in covered containers are permitted in the study rooms.

  • Furniture or equipment is not to be moved into or out of the study rooms except by authorized staff.

  • Group study rooms are not soundproof. Groups that are excessively noisy and disturb others may be asked to vacate group study rooms.

  • Violation of these group study room policies may result in suspension of Library privileges. Please direct any questions to Circulation Desk at 985-549-3968.
