HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences honored top graduates and its 2014 alumnus of the year at its annual honors convocation April 30.
Danny Heitman, a 1986 Southeastern graduate, received the college's top alumni honor. Heitman is an award-winning columnist for The Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper and the editor of its editorial page. His weekly column "At Random," which documents his life as a husband and father, has been a reader favorite since its debut in 1991.
His essays frequently appear in national publications, including "The New York Times," "The Washington Post," "Smithsonian," "The Wall Street Journal," "The Los Angeles Times," and "The Christian Science Monitor." He has appeared as a commentator on National Public Radio and on the BBC.
Departmental awards and scholarships were presented to the following:
AMITE – Megan Ourso, Outstanding Senior in English.
BATON ROUGE – Katrina Thomas, D Vickers Award in Creative Writing.
BELLE CHASE – John Atkins, Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Studio Art.
DENHAM SPRINGS – Zach Slough, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Studio Art; Jennifer Jarreau, Outstanding Graduate in General Studies; Christopher Gwynn, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Criminal Justice.
HAMMOND – Kara Heck, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Graphic Design.
KENTWOOD – Jesse White, James Wilcox Award in Music; Stephanie Travis, Director's Award for Academic Excellence in General Studies.
LAPLACE– Kimberly Landry, D Vickers Award in Creative Writing.
LIVINGSTON – Michael Milton, Harold Leu Award in Political Science.
MANDEVILLE – Lindsay Barrosse, Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Graphic Design.
MAUREPAS – Carli Fontenot, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Communication.
NEW ORLEANS – Malik Chaney, Ralph R. Pottle, Sr. Honor Scholarship; Bradley Davis, Martina Buck Award in History.
PRAIRIEVILLE – Lauren Jordan, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Psychology.
SAINT FRANCISVILLE – Hayley Arceneaux, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Spanish.
SLIDELL – Erika Dawson, Outstanding Senior in English; Emily McDonald, F. Dale Parent Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Sociology.
Also at the convocation, the college honored two faculty members with awards. Recognized were Sam Hyde, history and political science, for excellence in research; and Dale Newkirk, fine and performing arts, for excellence in artistic activity.
The college honored inductees into the Southeastern chapter of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society, the university's honor society the Thirteen Club, and students on the President's List, Dean's List, and Honor Roll.

1) HEITMAN NAMED SOUTHEASTERN ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR –Danny Heitman, center, a1986 Southeastern graduate, was named Alumnus of the Year by the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Southeastern Alumni Association. Congratulating Heitman at the college's annual honors convocation April 30 are Alumni Association board member Josh Taylor, and Alumni Association Assistant Director Julie Perise.
2) SOUTHEASTERN ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES HONORS (FACULTY) – At its honors
convocation April 30, Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Arts, Humanities
and Social Sciences honored several faculty members for excellence. From left are

3) SOUTHEASTERN ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES HONORS (Ascension) – Southeastern Louisiana University student Lauren Jordan, right, of Prairieville
was honored at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' April 30 honors
convocation. Jordan received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Psychology.
Congratulating her is Dean Karen Fontenot.
4) SOUTHEASTERN ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES HONORS (E. Baton Rouge) -- Southeastern Louisiana University student Katrina Thomas, right, from Baton Rouge
was honored at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' April 30 honors
convocation. Thomas received the D Vickers Award in Creative Writing. Congratulating
her is Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Karen Fontenot.

at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' April 30 honors convocation

both from New Orleans, were among the award winners at the College of Arts, Humanities
and Social Sciences' April 30 honors convocation. Chaney received the Ralph R. Pottle,
Sr. Honor Scholarship, while Davis received the Martina Buck Award in History.
7) SOUTHEASTERN ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES HONORS (St. John the Baptist) – Kimberly Landry, a Southeastern Louisiana University student from La Place, was
among the award winners at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' April
30 honors convocation. She was recognized with the D Vickers Award in Creative Writing.

at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' April 30 honors convocation
