The Family Skills Building training program covers the parenting needs and focuses on specific topics. The sessions are specialized to address the skills needed. The services are approximately eight-weeks and can be added to their curriculum to address the additional needs of the families.

Areas of Skills Training

  • Resource Management: The family is unable to provide the basic needs. Focuses on training in the areas of budget planning, money management, identification and utilization of resources, including SNAP benefits and Medicaid.
  • Environment and Safety: The family fails to provide a minimally safe shelter. Focuses on training in the areas of correcting safety concerns, such as childproofing, cleaning, and organizing the home environment.
  • Relationships and Communication: The family has conflict in the home, which has not resulted in violence and/or a domineering parent. Focuses on training in the areas of developing healthy relationships, anger management skills, and models of communication.
  • Health Care Advocacy: The child is not receiving regular health care or medical treatment, as needed. Focuses on teaching parents how to access treatment, navigate the health care system, and helps parents prepare the home for the child's needs.
  • Educational Advocacy: The parent is unaware of the child's educational needs. Focuses on training regarding educational options and how to advocate for the child in the school system.
  • Developmental Issues: A child within the family has special physical or developmental needs. Focuses on education regarding expectations and the development of the child.
  • Parenting/Child Issues: The parent has ambivalent feelings about the child and has limited knowledge about parenting techniques. Focuses on training regarding stress management, discipline techniques, and assists in identifying supports for the family.
