Classroom Teacher Enrollment Program (CTEP)

In 1993, the state of Louisiana enacted the Louisiana Classroom Teacher Enrollment Program (CTEP) law, which, if several stipulations are met, allows classroom teachers to attend Louisiana’s public colleges and universities tuition free (all other fees must be paid by the teacher) on a space available basis. The law also requires that classroom teachers who participate in CTEP during any one school year shall be obligated to practice as a classroom teacher in the elementary or secondary schools of Louisiana for at least the subsequent school year.

Students should have an understanding of the Louisiana Board of Regents’ CTEP eligibility and application guidelines before submitting a CTEP application to Southeastern.

General CTEP Guidelines

  1. A new CTEP application must be completed each semester. The deadline to apply is noon on the business day before the first day of class for each semester.
  2. Applicants must be employed as a full-time classroom teacher and hold a valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate. if the application is for the summer, have been so employed during the previous academic year.
  3. Students must have completed the appropriate admissions process and been accepted for admission by the university which they plan to attend under CTEP.
  4. Students must not be, or have been, registered for the semester in which they plan to participate in the CTEP program for the course(s) in which they intend to enroll under the CTEP program.
  5. Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for the course(s) in which they intend to enroll under CTEP. At Southeastern, this also includes and special permissions that may be needed to enroll in requested courses.
  6. Courses not eligible for CTEP include independent study courses, practicum courses, thesis courses, and dissertation courses.
  7. The Board of Regents’ CTEP guidelines provide for up to 18 hours of CTEP between the fall, spring and summer semesters and a limit of 6 hours per semester. For example, a student can take 6 credits in fall, spring and summer for a total of 18 credits.

Basic Steps for Students (to be done prior to the first day of classes)

  1. Email your CTEP Application for the semester to [email protected].
  2. Be sure that you have applied for admissions or are eligible to enroll in classes for the requested term.
  3. Get advised and have all holds/class permissions taken care of.

After the add/drop period ends for each semester, the Office of the Registrar will add eligible students to their requested classes. Then, those eligible students will be sent to the Controller’s Office to have their CTEP waiver applied. This process may take 2-3 business days.

Completed applications and any CTEP questions should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar at [email protected].

Students should contact the Controller’s Office for Teacher Tuition Exemption information.
